Sadly, NWN franchise never belonged to EA. ATARI had the publishing rights and the IP, but now the rights are with Hasbro (the owners of the Wizards of The Coast company and the D&D franchise). My guess is that the ATARI servers are completely dead by now (and as they do not have the publishing rights anymore, they probably decided to cut the online MP).
The beauty of the modern gaming, i know, but let's face it: NWN 2 IS an old game now. There are ways to play the game in MP, though, but you will have to search deeper on the web.
