I squeezed in lots of reading time on the subway today due to the snow storm. One part of today’s subway reading was the story “ The Night Rhonda Ferguson Was Killed” from “ Lost in the City” by Edward P. Rhonda Ferguson is a local high school student who is on her way to stardom as a singer (in the days before American Idol) and promises to take along her friend Cassandra Lewis.

We meet Cassandra and Rhonda at the start of the story as Rhonda goes off to sign a promised recording contract. We don’t see Rhonda again until the conclusion of the story when Cassandra and her friend are shattered to discover the Rhonda has been shot to death by the father of her baby. I’ll resist attempting to summarize any further and reflect a bit about some of the things that strike me about the writing. This is one of those books that I wish I had written a long time ago and I’ve already ordered a copy of Jones’ other short story collection. There are sentences inserted here and there that do little to move the story forward in the strictest sense, but do wonderful things to create the scene or elicit a certain feeling. I’ve chosen a few of these below and share them for their own sake without much attempt at analysis.

As Cassandra pulls up to her friend Gladys’s house, she observes the following; The house and the yard were uncommonly immaculuate. At the end of the story, Cassandra sits down on the bed at her friends apartment, still in shock at Rhonda’s murder. Setting the tone for the conclusion of the story, Jones writes; An eyeless and very old teddy bear leaning back against her bed pillows had fallen over when Cassandra sat down.
